The Art Gallery of New South Wales is the state's leading museum of art and one of Australia's foremost cultural institutions. The Gallery holds important collections of Australian, Western and Asian art and presents nearly forty exhibitions annually, including two - ARTEXPRESS and Operation Art - that incorporate student works. We are excited to have the new Asian galleries, enabling us to once again offer a full range of education programs and resources in support of a very important collection. The new Asian galleries also incorporate for the first time a changing exhibition programme ranging from traditional to the most cutting-edge contemporary Asian art. Our education and audience specialists are committed to making the collections and temporary exhibitions widely accessible. Education co-ordinators for years K-6 and 7-12 have developed wide-ranging, enjoyable and relevant student programs. We also offer a range of valuable educational resources to assist your visit or for use in the classroom. While education programming has traditionally focused heavily on Visual Arts, the collections and many exhibitions also have programs that are relevant for History, English, Studies in Society, Studies of Religion, Aboriginal Studies, Asian Social Studies (Cultures, Society and Identity from 2005) and Languages. This relevance is now formally reinforced in these pages by directly connecting selected syllabi to specific programs. These services have been developed by the Education Co-ordinators in conjunction with teachers and DET consultants from these subjects. The Gallery's education programs are further extended by the inclusion of programs for gifted and talented students and accessible programs, for students with hearing and visual impairment. We trust that these pages - and the website in general - will be of assistance in planning your visit to the Art Gallery of New South Wales. They have been produced to supplement the bi-annual Education Poster, which highlights the year's temporary exhibitions, and the quarterly Exhibitions & Events brochures. I encourage you and your students to regularly visit this extremely valuable resource. We look forward to seeing you soon. Brian Ladd Head of Public Programs |
