FRANCE - the cradle of modern art, of winemaking, cuisine and fashion - has set the pace in Europe for centuries. First came the rise of the nation, with its legacy in Gothic architecture. Then under the absolute monarchy Paris began its transformation into the great capital it is today.

But absolutism contained the seeds of its own destruction. The philosophers of the Enlightenment armed the 1789 revolution with a new creed and the world with a new kind of politics. Liberty, Equality and Fraternity were the watchwords of the day, and the social landscape was changed forever.

The artistic and intellectual ferment of post-Napoleonic France produced generations of artists, poets, thinkers and filmmakers who have shaped the culture of our times. For these people, in the words of the French Embassy's Cultural Counsellor Jean Poncet, 'life is about being, not having'.

In this series some of Australia's most distinguished Francophiles trace the development of the country's influence from medieval times until today. For one Sunday morning each month from June to November, take an armchair journey through history with them as we explore the essence of being French.

Each session will be held on Sunday in the Domain Theatre. Fees include complimentary coffee, pain au chocolat and a light lunch with wine. Each day will follow a similar format:
