Struck

Struck

Anna Munster and Michele Barker present the Australian premiere of their multi-channel video and sound installation, Struck - a work that critically addresses the complexities of being diagnosed with a neurological disease.

Using a combination of black and white photographic, video, graphic and textual images, the work wraps around the walls, surrounding the viewer in a space that makes reference to the process and visual outcomes of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) techniques. The images and text, along with the accompanying soundtrack, draw the audience into the turbulence and confusion of the emotional experience of disease and its relationship to contemporary medical and scientific imaging processes.

Michele Barker works in the field of new media arts, exhibiting nationally and internationally. Barker's work integrates photographic, video and interactive practices. Her work is concerned with issues relating to perception, subjectivity, genetics and neuroscience. She recently completed a PhD that addresses notions of corporeality and otherness within the paradigms of medicine and science. Barker is a lecturer at the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales.

Anna Munster is a media artist and theorist. She works in video, sound and new media and has exhibited in Japan, Europe and the USA. She has published the book Materializing New Media (2006) and is a senior lecturer at the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales. Both her art and writing deal with the relations between technology/science, embodiment and politics.

Level 2 AGNSW Contemporary Projects are supported by Andrew Cameron and UBS.
